The 296 offers an optional Surround View to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Mustang GTD only offers a rear monitor and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the front or sides.

The 296’s optional blind spot warning system uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. The Mustang GTD doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver’s blind spots.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the 296’s optional rear cross-path warning system uses sensors in the rear to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The Mustang GTD doesn’t offer a rear cross-path warning system.

Both the 296 and the Mustang GTD have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras and available crash mitigating brakes.

The 296 comes with a full 3-year/unlimited-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Mustang GTD’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires sooner.

Ferrari pays for scheduled maintenance on the 296 for 7 years and unlimited miles. Ferrari will pay for oil changes, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Ford doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Mustang GTD.

The 296’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 hybrid produces 4 more horsepower (819 vs. 815) than the Mustang GTD’s 5.2 supercharged V8. The 296 Speciale’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 hybrid produces 53 more horsepower (868 vs. 815) than the Mustang GTD’s 5.2 supercharged V8.

The 296 can travel with zero emissions for 7 to 8 miles (dependent on model). The Mustang GTD can’t move without running its internal combustion engine.

Regenerative brakes improve the 296’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Mustang GTD doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

The 296 has 1.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the Mustang GTD (17.2 vs. 16 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The 296 has a standard locking fuel door and a locking charge port with a power remote release convenient to the driver. The Mustang GTD doesn’t offer a locking fuel filler door. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank and a locking charge port prevents tampering and damage.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Ferrari 296 higher (5 out of 10) than the Ford Mustang GTD (4). This means the 296 produces up to 5.2 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Mustang GTD every 15,000 miles.

The 296 stops shorter than the Mustang GTD:

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires optional on the 296 can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The Mustang GTD doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

The Ferrari 296 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 950 to 1250 pounds less than the Ford Mustang GTD.

The 296 is 1 foot, 1.9 inches shorter than the Mustang GTD, making the 296 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The 296 is 9 inches shorter in height than the Mustang GTD, making the 296 much easier to wash and garage and drive (lower center of gravity).

The 296’s standard power retractable hardtop allows a seamless transition from an open car, to a completely sealed coupe. The Mustang GTD doesn’t offer a retractable hardtop.

The 296 has a standard heads-up display that projects speed and tachometer readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Mustang GTD doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The 296’s standard rear view mirror and optional side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. The Mustang GTD has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

Both the Ferrari 296 and Ford Mustang GTD offer exterior mirrors that can be folded to provide convenience. The 296 features standard power folding mirrors, which allow for easy, one-touch folding or unfolding at the driver’s discretion. This provides added convenience when maneuvering or parking, as well as when walking past the parked vehicle. In comparison, the Mustang GTD’s foldable mirrors are manual, requiring the driver to get out and physically fold them once parked and unfold them before getting in.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the 296 offers an optional Adaptive CruiseControl, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The Mustang GTD doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Ferrari 296 has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) for the front seat. The Mustang GTD doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.

The Ferrari 296 comes in coupe and convertible bodystyles; the Ford Mustang GTD isn’t available as a convertible.
